The Power of Unity
Beyond all these things put on and wrap yourselves in (unselfish) love, which is the perfect bond of unity (for everything is bound together in agreement when each one seeks the best for others). Colossians 3:14 AMP.
This is a very powerful verse. This reminds me of a story in Genesis 11, it described the human imagination and determination for the construction of the “Tower of Babel.” The interesting thing about the project was that it was decided out of a rebellion. The people were united in their goal to build such an enormous tower for their glory and to perhaps show their independence from God.
United to Rebel Against God
But God searches the hearts and the motive for actions and saw what was in their hearts and the great success they have made based on their unity of purpose, and God said that because of their unity if allowed that “nothing will be impossible for them.” Can you imagine what happened next? In verses 5 – 8, “Now the ord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.
And the LORD said, “Behold, they are one (unified) people, and they all have the same language. This is only the beginning of what they will do (in rebellion against Me), and now no evil thing they imagine they can do will be impossible for them. Come, let Us (Father Son, Holy Spirit) go down and there consume and mix up their language so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the surface of the entire earth, and they stopped building the city. What a mighty God! The bible recorded that the people were scattered abroad from there over the surface of the entire earth. When we were children, we were told that this was the reason why there are different languages all over the world.
What a lesson for man to learn, unfortunately, man’s heart has always bent on disobeying God. But what is striking to me about this story, is how God took note of their unity, He saw how unified the people were in carrying out their evil agenda. If believers can have the same unity in carrying out God’s purpose you can imagine what the impact will be like. The devil knows the power of unity, that’s why he works so hard to cause divisions in the family, church, government, and everywhere.
God is very interested in the unity of His children, all believers, should be able to observe Colossians 3. Also, in John 17:11, Jesus prayed a passionate prayer, asking that God should keep the believers to be united in one accord. David in Psalm 133:1, testified, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity! Anything that brings disunity is against God’s will.
God Loves Unity
God loves unity, because unity promotes love, as God is love. Unity brings progress, safety, peace, generosity, humility, and freedom. Because of man’s rebellion against the ways of God, man will continue to suffer the consequences of his wrong and selfish choice. Today, we have enslaved our minds. We have caused pain to one another, we communicate envy, jealousy, greed, and division. God will release blessings on people that honor Him and His Word with all their hearts.
For a Christian home to flourish and carry out God’s purpose, unity must be visible and observed. That means that selfish behaviors and tendencies must be avoided at all costs. Bitterness, unforgiveness, pride, and fault finding should not be tolerated.
As Christians, let us pray against the agenda of the enemy to cause division in the homes, among believers, leaders, and government. God is God of love and peace and that is what Jesus demonstrated during His earthly ministry. He came to practically show us the ways of God. If we are truly children of God as many claims, then we should allow the character of God to be seen in us. Let the world, the non-Christians see our daily conduct and confession of faith and be attracted to our faith, instead of being repellents.
This is a truth that should be told at all times. We are in a time when the devil is actively out for relationships, entering the hearts of men and sowing seeds of discord. There is envy and jealousy in place of togetherness and oneness.
The will of God for us is to be united in all ramifications of life, as couples, family members, Christian community or congregation etc. Together we stand, divided we fall. May God help us all.
Bethel, thank you for your excellent and candid comment. You amplified better than. Indeed, we need God’s mercy!
